I pretty much hate calling them "smilies" too.

Emojis are really just the latest iteration of graphical characters.

Extended ASCII and variants like Commodore's PETSCII and Atari's ATASCII had a maximum of 256 characters due to the 8-bit limitation. Things like spades and hearts that could be used to program card games.

When multibyte character sets arrived, they had room for more characters than they could possibly use for any legitimate purpose.

I have glasses, but they're practically worthless. The last pair stopped working within a couple of months after I bought them. I can actually read better without them. I only need them for distance vision.
