Humor requires intelligent thought, which means higher thought processes... which means enhanced potential of survival.
So if you're ugly, but you're funny too, you have a better chance at survival than someone who is just ugly.
If you're boring, no matter what you look like, you have a diminished chance of survival.
If you're pretty and boring, you have as good a chance of survival as someone who is ugly but has a GREAT sense of humor.
Boring and decent looks = ugly with only a decent sense of humor... survival rates equal, both only JUST getting by.
Boring and ugly? Fucked. Ugly with no sense of humor? Fucked.
So I hope that makes sense.
