Yep, all the fine interstellar dust from exploded stars, and their orbiting planets that get caught in the supernova.
Some interstellar dust might also come from stars and planets that get caught in the event horizon of black holes.
They get grounded up like in a coffee grinder and some of the dust escapes.
I personally absolutely love the smell of ozone.
It fills me with wonder and a sense of belonging knowing that space smells that way.

The dust is freeze dried in a vacuum, so when you inhale a sample the moisture in your nose activates it.
That would explain why it's so powerful and leaves such an impression on these astronauts!

Besides, it's technically impossible to know what space smells like anyway.
It's not like you can step right on out there and take a big deep breath full of space air!?!
In another part of the video, he describes what would happen to you if you went out there without a spacesuit on. It's even worse than what the movies portray.
So space smells like assteroids.
