It'll help you fish the boogers out more easily.
Something about the shape of the inner nose and all those nooks and crannies in there are more easy to access when you hold your mouth the right way.
If you have small enough fingers pinky works a bit
Best to have just a tad bit of length to your nails too.
You gotta make that full on snarl though... a big smile won't work the same.

I think another crucial component to successful nose picking is to make sure you've got gravity on your side.
Work with gravity to really get ahold of those boogers.
If you're sitting in an upside down position, imagine how hard it would be to pick your nose. A lot of this is common sense.

I've noticed picking your nose with the opposite side's finger really doesn't work very well.
