I've seen this movie multiple times since 1999... a few times all the way through, a few times in bits and pieces. I wanted to watch it one more time from the perspective that the kid knows the doctor guy is dead the whole time. I don't know when was the last time I watched this movie... well over a decade I'm sure.
This movie was a HUGE deal when I was a kid. I mean it was EVERYWHERE... EVERYONE was talking about it. Huge. The film has been on the conscious fore lately, and I'm not really sure why. Maybe it's because Bruce Willis recently became the first hollywood legend to sign over the full rights to his entire image/voice to be used with AI in movies for all eternity. It was the only way forward for him to make money for the rest of his life since he came down with that super bad case of aphasia under sus circumstances.
10:13 with an opening like that, it's surprising that the whole audience didn't figure he was dead all along. I bet there were some clever peeps who did pick up on it from the start though. Everybody seemed pretty shocked by the twist back in the day, so I don't really think too many people suspected.
11:30 the notes doctor guy (Malcolm) has on the kid (Cole) are pretty interesting. I guess his mom contacted him to meet with Cole before he ever died, and now he's just going around with his notes trying to fulfill obligations? This must be how he knows to come and try to help Cole. I guess he could have written those notes after the fact, I dunno... but I just get the sense that a meeting with Malcolm was already in the works before he died. Could be wrong though.
The notes and the way he's following him just adds a whole other layer to the monumental pestering Cole gets from those who have passed on.
The one thing I always noted about this movie was the way this kid was carrying the weight of the world and beyond on his shoulders. Knowing that he's gonna see all these dead people and nobody else is gonna understand what he's experiencing. The psychological insight that is provided by all these experiences with the ghosts. It's super heavy and remarkably well communicated through every line and scene in the movie.
This is M. Night Shyamalan's best work, no contest.
14:42 "I'm gonna see you again, right?" The way he said this was perfect... it just reeks of "FFS, not another one." But it's one of those things you don't notice the first time around. Brilliant.
18:24 "Oh." The delivery of that simple line perfectly encapsulates how totally fucking freaked out his character is. This movie is so well done. It's incredible. Haley Joel Osment was without a doubt one of the greatest kid actors of all time.
19:06 he's barely in the frame for a second, but the look on his face is perfect as he's running off with the Pop-Tart. It's 100% "This is some shit I made up, but I gotta go with it anyways." Masterful performance.
20:20 this scene is a perfect example of how SO MUCH assumption goes on the first time you watch this movie. You just assume she knows the guy is there.
21:11 it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize they were just 'imagining' their day to make things more positive and happy, lol.
21:27 "You got an hour." It's lines like this that, again, make you assume that the guy is SUPPOSED to be there right now, like this is some kind of appointment that was set up... that she KNOWS he's there. But in reality, um no. None of that. Lol.
21:33 the way he looks at Malcolm, like he's such an intruder, but there's also this nagging sense of compassion too... it's just fucking amazing dude. I am so glad I decided to watch this again because I can really appreciate what an epic performance Haley gave in this movie. And I mean, he's been in other stuff since then as an adult and whatnot... but I feel like when your career starts off with something as iconic as The Sixth Sense (and Forrest Gump), you legitimately never NEED to be in another movie ever again. There are few roles that I can really say that about, particularly for kid actors.
21:44 I meeeaaannn... he IS a doctor bro, like. Yeah he's dead, but. Maybe he CAN help.
22:00 I feel like one of the reasons Cole humors Malcolm is because Malcolm is sort of interesting... he's not really like the other ghosts. He doesn't seem mega fixated or stuck in what caused him to die, whereas a lot of the other ones are.
22:22 the way he looks toward the kitchen where his mom is cooking just hits different when you realize the situation Cole is in... he's dealing with a freakin' dead doctor bro in the living room who wants to freakin' TALK, but Cole's gotta keep it quiet and act like nothing's going on because as far as his mom knows, they're alone in the apartment.
23:00 you know, this scene makes me wish I had a friendly doctor ghost to chill with... but then I realize that shit was my entire childhood, BWAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (If you know, you know. If you don't, hey... buy the rights.)
25:10 #relatable.
26:21 so here's one of the instances of the red they use in this movie for symbolism. That was one of the main things I remember being discussed back in the day... what did all the red mean? Here's what Shyamalan said it means... "It alerts us to anything in the real world that has been tainted by the other world." It's basically indicating that something is a bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. Then there are all the standard symbolic meanings of red... https://www.wcmanet.org/red-door-meaning
26:30 I mean, TBH, this guy's gotta be pretty slow to not know he's dead. For real. And the shit is so unrealistic too. In reality, he'd constantly be pestering her for sex and when she kept ignoring him, he'd have been long gone trying to solicit sex from a hooker or something. Eventually he'd catch on that he's dead, especially if he flashed cash and still got ignored. But hey, it's just a movie, it's supposed to be an imaginative escape from the norm so I will cut it some slack.
26:38 "I just can't seem to keep track of time." That would make a lot of sense... to him, it must be like he just appears in places without really knowing how he got there. There's a definite lack of cohesion to his experience. But I feel like this scene right here might have been one of the first tip-offs for people to suspect his character is dead.
26:48 considering how stoked she was on him in the opening scene, there's no logical way she'd be so cold and detached now. This scene vaguely tries to make you think maybe since the incident with his old client, he's become obsessed with doing the best he can with these troubling cases to 'right' past 'wrongs'. But I still think more than anything, the scene is a huge tip-off to the fact that he's dead.
27:46 there's sooooo much attention to detail with these scenes though... while he's talking, people are laughing in the background causing a spike in volume and she looks up in their direction, but it almost seems like maybe she could have been looking at him. It's fucking amazing.
27:58 "Happy Anniversary." But it's lines like this that keep you in uncertainty. When you know about the plot twist though, it's actually just 100% mega sad. On first watch, you think she's just being a cunt, but when you watch it again you realize she's just mourning him sooo hard and it's sad as fuck. And I mean, of course you'd mourn him, Bruce Willis was super hot back in the day.
28:55 again man, it just hits different when you realize Cole's standing there talking to a dead guy, I mean... it's all just totally cold comfort.
29:50 the pictures are trippy because there's always space between Cole and whatever else is in the picture cuz there's always a ghost with him. There was a picture of me as a kid with one of those sparkly things beside me and this was always mentioned when we were watching this movie in my house back in the day, lol.
31:20 the camera work in this scene is creepy as hell.
32:10 this scene is great because it makes you think his mom found those pages and gave them to the doctor.
33:00 the movie really does make you think... what if people are seeing ghosts and that's why they're acting all weird and shit!? We gotta have compassion for people, yo.
33:40 sounds like somebody's hungry for a piece of Anna's sweet ass!?
34:10 I mean, he kinda does look like he needs to eat a cheeseburger before he even starts thinking about dessert though... like I get that this was the '90s and people weren't as fat back then, but this guy looks too thin.
34:20 I never understood the "cheese dick" insult before... now I get it though, pretty sure it's a reference to being uncircumcised, which is hot.
43:07 I never understood who was supposed to be behind the door all pissed off, it never made sense to me but now I get it.
43:50 kids are soooo dumb and evil. Then they grow up to be dumb, evil adults. Who'da thunk it?!
45:40 I guess Shyamalan makes cameos in his films.
46:36 God, it sucks to be this kid. Lol.
48:50 so I guess this IS his version of being fixated on his own death. But it still seems way more intricate and involved than the other ghosts get. They don't do magic tricks or tell lame stories and whatever... he's different.
50:25 it's the iconic "I see dead people" scene. It's been parodied and shown around so much that it's basically impossible to remember what it felt like to see it for the first time. I simply can't.
50:40 it's such a great scene because it's probably the first time Cole has ever told one of these ghosts that he sees ghosts, lol. This movie is an experience, man. There are two versions of this movie... the one you see the first time, and the one you re-watch.
51:15 agh my God, CHIIIIILLS dude, CHILLLLLLS.
51:42 but again, like asking him to stay until he falls asleep... it doesn't lead on that Malcolm is dead. The fortitude of the whole plot really rides on these red herrings.
51:55 and the bitch of it is this deadass doctor thinks the kid's schizo, loool. AGH. Aaaaagggghhh.
55:30 dude, the ghost that lives in his apartment is gnarrrrlllyyyy.
55:55 it's like wow, what a shit-tastic onslaught, this kid just can't catch a break.
56:22 this movie has super dated elements in it... to me, it almost seems like they KNEW how it would come off to us in the future. From the taboo Zoloft in the bathroom cabinet, to these big clunky camcorders at the school play... it seems purposely dramatized.
56:36 I think this is another instance where people could start suspecting that the doctor is dead. Why would he be at the school play? His mom works multiple jobs... it's not realistic to think she can afford to have this psychiatrist follow her kid everywhere.
58:33 so creepy. I feel like this scene was straight up for the previews/teaser/trailer. Like, they had to have something that doesn't really give away the plot that much.
59:20 this scene between Cole and Malcolm kinda suggests that he feels like doctor ghost is different than all the rest too... he confides in him and it seems like he thinks maybe Malcolm may have some kinda elevated power in the ghostly realm. But it also just suggests a naivety... yeah, he's been dealing with this his whole life but he's still just a kid.
"Stir of Echoes" came out the same year... it sorta feels like they took the general idea of the ending scene with the kid in the car riding by all the houses and made it into an entire movie.
1:00:00 lol they make you hate this bully kid so bad.
1:00:51 hardcore Virgo vibes from his mom though... 100%, stressed AF Virgo.
1:03:40 ghosts seem like they'd be pretty annoying though, being all hung up on how they died and shit, just kinda stuck in a loop like that. Good thing that's literally not how it works?!
1:04:40 the lady in the middle in this scene is Samia Shoaib and I always thought she was mega hot. Craaaazy hot. Her current slogan is "I used to be an actress, but I'm alright now." I knew I liked that chick.
1:05:00 I love how she's insisting on having the best for herself... that's hot.
1:06:36 see, there's no way the audience isn't suspecting that doctor bro is dead. For real. His wife would not be doing this shit if he was alive, there's no way. The gig is almost up for sure.
1:06:48 man I don't LIKE this guy... he's not as hot as Bruce Willis and he just seems like a tool.
1:06:55 I mean he's KIND OF cute, I guess, but... I wouldn't want a piece.
1:08:04 by "only one", he means ghost, bruh.
I can't remember how the movie ends, and that's pretty awesome. This will be the last time I ever watch it that I won't remember how it ends. Maybe the last time I ever watch it at all... probably so.
1:11:00 even the red on the volume knob is significant.
1:16:00 so the "protection" symbolism of the color red is pretty apparent in this scene wherein his safehaven tent has become structurally compromised and therefore allowed entry to a wandering spirit.
1:16:33 this was probably the scene that was most classically "horror" and creeped people out the most.
1:17:20 *jerk* "FFS, WHAT DO YOU WANT!?!!"
1:19:50 dude the wallpaper in that house is fuckin' heinous.
1:20:42 "Don't go home, okay?" As if he would... this line is a hint. He's trying to anchor doctor ghost in the situation so that he doesn't wander off.
1:38:13 I definitely remember watching this the first time and that huge plot twist felt sooo shocking, lmao. I think even if people suspected, they still may not have been totally sure until that moment.
Definitely one of the greatest fucking movies of all time.
