The reason why it seems that we are "alone in the universe" and that there are no other advanced civilizations out there is because of our respective suns.
All stars emit blasts of radiation which ultimately disable any advanced technology that exists within their solar systems.
It's inevitable.
This is why there probably haven't been visitors from distant stars. The best we can ever hope for is to receive radio transmissions from distant worlds, just like the ones we've sent out.
It may be thousands of years, there may be time for a civilization to advance to the point of having tech... but eventually, the local star is gonna whip out a deathblow EMP that will cripple all tech and send that civilization back to the Stone Age.
There is no escape...
It's only a matter of time for us too.
This is why AI/robots can never be the immortality solution...
Biological life is the only type of life that is impervious to EMP. In fact, biological life is quite resilient, always surviving ELEs and other disasters, in one form or another, how ever big or small. The only inescapable eventual death for lifeforms within solar systems is when their star goes supernova. At this time, any life that existed is reset back to "building blocks" format and may seed whatever heavenly bodies are in their path.
If man merged with machine (brain implants, etc.) an EMP would disable the hardware in the body... a situation which may even be deadly to the person with the implant. If they had remained a pure human, there would be no fatal damage sustained from any type of EMP event.
This is a built in safeguard that exists within all star systems. Solar systems are contained units within the universal body... nothing within any one star system may exist outside of its original sun's magnetic field.
Any migration outside of the origin star system would be viewed as a cancer within the body of the universe, an unwanted invading force, and it would be dealt with by the 'immune system' of the universe.
This is why we don't get visitors.
Any visitors that we have ever had originated from our own solar system...
I highly doubt there has ever been an advanced civilization which physically traveled between stars. Even if they had miraculously managed to progress that far without being taken out by any EMP, they'd be subject to getting dealt with by any other star they ever encounter.
Of course, interdimensional beings are another matter. This subject pertains strictly to the physical.
