It suggests a failure of the carbon fiber hull rather than the viewing port window, which I had assumed was the issue.

One analysis I heard said it was carbon fiber fatigue from the sub going down one time too many. This problem has been a time bomb from the beginning. No independent certification firm would sign off on the sub because of it.
