Full Version: It's annoying when people think you're talking about them but you're totally not...

This is a phenomenon I've been running into online for several years.

It's legitimately a mental illness, on the most severe end of its spectrum.

But I have yet to hear anyone give this particular delusion a label...

If there is a label for this, please enlighten me.

It's not 'paranoia' because it's not necessarily a negative thing in these peoples' minds.

I've seen it go both ways, some people take it the negative route and get all scared and paranoid thinking everyone is talking about them, or referencing them.

And I've seen people take it the positive route thinking something that was said that was nice etc. was about them.

Then there's the less severe end of the spectrum where it's just everyday people with no actual mental problem just assuming that you're talking about them...

That's the annoying one. The former is intriguing though...

Obnoxious and genuinely sad, but intriguing.

And BTW...

If you think I'm referencing you with this post...

Are you talking about me?

Kidding.

Solipsism is the word you're looking for.
Hmm *sips coffee*

Interesting read. Haven´t really encountered this phenomenon myself.

Yeah see I think that is way closer to an answer for this than the 'paranoia' label...

I did some searches and all I came up with was a bunch of 'paranoia' labels and no direct descriptions of the phenomenon I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is different than the common paranoia delusion that people are talking about you behind your back, like in public, or that they're laughing at you, etc. That IS paranoia.

What I'm talking about is like this 'solipsism' where it honestly seems like people look at the world like EVERYTHING is personally relating to them.

And actually rather than being related to paranoia, it seems more closely related to the delusion among some schizophrenics where they believe that certain popstars are referencing them in their songs, or that certain movie characters have been inspired by them.

Very interesting.
And it's genuinely a mental illness when it's at the extreme end of the spectrum, so I am not trying to be an asshole and saying those people 'annoy' me...

I basically threw these two extremes together, and maybe I shouldn't have, but let's face it, they do come from the same place...

It's just that one is not so horribly out of balance with reality, and the other is completely out of balance.

Next time you're talking to a woman, start making generalizations about women. I guarantee it'll be all about her. LOL
Some people can't take texting either, I know people have broken up over misinterpreted text messages. :(
Seem to come from fuckwits who make extremely generic comments that literally could apply to anyone so almost everyone thinks its about them.
