I think the whole robot thing could be a mirage - a sci-fi fantasy fueled by men´s tech interest.
This is very well illustrated in the new Blade Runner movie (it was kinda meh btw don´t bother). In the movie he has a fake girl friend, starts out as a hologram and then he upgrades her to a physical state, but then the door bell rings (or something similar maybe it was a phone call) and he just *click* shuts her off.
