I tried not consuming any dairy whatsoever, I tried not eating any meat at all...
And it just wasn't feasible for me.
I don't drink milk, but I do have cheese sometimes.
I do eat eggs.
I don't eat furry or feathered creatures, but I will eat fish.
And that's where it began... FISH.
I saw the word on the back of a semi, and I noticed a very interesting sequence of feelings ensue.
Some sort of primal reaction was roused in me... I wanted fish. Bad.
I thought about other meats... there was absolutely no desire surrounding them at all.
It wasn't just meat I wanted... it was fish. And only fish.
Therefore, I ate fish... and I realized why I am fine with eating fish, but not other kinds of meat.
It's because fish are COLD BLOODED. I am a warm blooded creature, and so are the feathered and furry animals. If I eat my fellow warm blooded creatures, I am in a sense being a cannibal.
And why would I eat the warm blooded creatures? I don't even WANT to.
But fish is another story. A few days ago, I was behind the same semi I had seen months earlier with "FISH" on the back in big bold letters. The reaction was the same.
I think our bodies tell us what we need, if we would just listen.
Mine tells me to eat fish, eggs, citrus, and anything green. It makes me feel great.
As a side note, I drink coffee as well. Every day, a few cups typically. I used to have it with a lot of cream and sugar. Recently, I've come to realize it's just immature if you can't drink coffee black. The cream, the sugar, it's terrible for you. Absolutely terrible, not to mention the damage it can do to your teeth if you're casually drinking coffee all day. Now I drink my coffee black, and actually, it's delicious. When I made the decision, I was going to TEACH myself to like it, even if I thought it sucked. Luckily, it's great.
I consider myself a purist...
It's an ongoing effort, these things don't happen overnight. To be conscious about what you eat is a process.
I don't drink alcohol... but I have a lot of it in case the world ends, but that's a whole different story. I don't think there are any drugs on the planet which humans should be consuming, natural or not. Try it a few times, fine... keep doing it, and you're dependent. Dependency is never good... no matter what. If you can't go without it, then you are dependent on it. Unless it's water or quality food, you're under its control. I don't believe in being under the control of anything or anyone.
As for food, the only things I eat that I don't consider in line with my purist aspirations are cheese and the occasional sweet treat. Therefore, I will highly control the amount of cheese I consume... it won't be much. I'll still have it though. Sweets, completely unnecessary and I'd like to rid them out of my life entirely. Having said that... there's so much extremism in the vegan community, and that type of attitude is unappealing. The idea of NEVER eating anything exciting like candy and whatnot is simply boring. Those hardcore vegan people who don't eat cake for example, or candy... I can't relate to them. I don't want to. A life entirely without treats every now and then is just boring.
As a programmable human, you have to hack your own mind and behaviors... you have to give yourself something to look forward to, or at least leave the door open for decadence and enjoyment every now and then, otherwise shit is just going to be bleak.
I think if you can be vegan without having any nagging cravings for things that go against the fabric of everything you're supposed to believe... fine. If you can be vegan and not notice deficiencies and similar weaknesses creeping in... great. But try not to judge people who can't do that. People are different... their needs vary. I agree that nobody NEEDS red meat, or chicken, or pork. But there's something about fish (as a cold blooded creature) that is different from other types of meat. I think if you are cutting out processed sugars, eating mostly vegetables and fruits, and just having the occasional fish... you're doing a pretty good job taking care of your body. That should be encouraged rather than meeting it with the attitude of it not being good enough... or trying to assert that people who eat fish and eggs don't care about the animals. Because that's not true.
