The echoes from the future are caused by bleed-through. The tape has a bunch of magnetized particles stuck to it. Since the tape is wound in a spiral, the magnetic field from one layer can magnetize particles in adjacent layers. That's why you faintly hear Robert Plant sing "Hey, hey, mama..." a half second before the song starts in "Black Dog."

If you're hearing the flip-side playing backwards, the playback head is out of alignment and playing both sides of the tape at once.
