Mutt Lange produced this album. The band members thought it sounded over the top when they heard it. Totally not what they were used to at the time. Their next couple of albums had the same style nevertheless.

Ah yeah man The Cars are like the greatest of all time, love them so much...

They had issue with 'The Cars' album cover too though...

They thought it was 'cartoonish'.

It's iconic though, as we all know now.

Interesting to hear about some of the things they found fault with...

In my opinion the whole nine yards was perfect, everything they did.

I can't vouch for anything after Door to Door though...

I don't consume any post-Benjamin Orr material.

This is from their 2011 comeback album. Some of the band members had previously formed a band with Todd Rundgren (and without Ric Ocasek) called The New Cars in the early 2000s. I like Todd when he's doing his own thing, but he can't write Cars songs to save his life.

I think that may have been part of the problem. Lange was too much of a perfectionist. The drum machines had to be millisecond precise. And that thing he does with the layered vocals to make them sound extra fat. I think he had just finished Def Leppard's Pyromania when he did Heartbeat City. The Cars had a more natural sound up until that point.

Well I totally respect that guy's obsessive qualities...

Nobody who ever worked on any Cars album ever did anything wrong.

And that's pretty magical bro.

I'm not knocking it. It's one of my favorite albums. Just saying it came at them unexpectedly.
