I'm not talking about "I'm being chased by something/someone" kinda fear...
I'm talking DEEP fear.
Take for example a wealthy man, who for all intents and purposes COULD be free...
Yet this man is terrified of being alone.
He is not free...
He has never tasted freedom.
And if he had, he would have never given it up.
If you are truly free, even those who society tells you are "free" will envy that freedom, and they will want you to forfeit your freedom...
Because misery loves company.
Do not.

I'm not talking "fear of doing something new" either.
These are deep seated fears with which freedom can't coexist...
Fears that usually have their roots in early life, the earliest brainwashing that took place.
The earliest experiences of compromised security, and that can come in a lot of forms.

The type of fear that keeps people away from freedom can seem a lot like that though...
It's REALLY similar. Which is why it's so important to make 'breaking' the comfort zone a habit.
Of course a lot of care needs to be done in making those decisions which get us out of the comfort zone...
Can't be careless and thoughtless about things, you do have to use some degree of foresight.
Generally though... from what I've seen, people 'with means' are the ones most stuck in their comfort zones.

Fear stricken people who just can't bring themselves to rock the boat because, again as it perhaps was in the very distant past, their sense of security might be shaken.
They'll never find out if it really is or not because they're too afraid to let go.
Most will just stay prisoners of fear.

Invisible bars...
Nicely decorated, high quality prisons.
Fearing what people think of you seems like a hellish way to live, talk about self imposed prisons
