I'd have to see/hear it to judge whether or not it seemed like he knew there was some type of significant impairment coming, and to what degree of seriousness he interpreted it.
Judging by the fact that he simply went still, it doesn't sound like he was even considering making any fast moves.
So I just wonder what was the nature and intensity of his physical feelings as an indicator of oncoming impairment/inability to perform.
