I don't think anyone took it seriously. The gag was that all red board posters were "e-biz tycoons" who owned a "mantion" and a "yot". The original site existed to make fun of the first dot com boom and bust, when a lot of people thought they were going to get rich from building a website without actually having a workable business plan.
The deliberate misspellings were sometimes based on accidental misspellings that became part of the lore. Sort of like how hackers started spelling "the" as "teh". They were called "FCisms" after the initials of the original board name, FC.
