Have you ever been out celebrating your birthday with "friends," and you were expected to be the one to buy everyone's drinks?
Real friends would buy your drinks on your birthday.
Contrast that with the friends I had when I was flat broke working in a fast food joint. Successful guys who truly enjoyed hanging out with me. It didn't matter to them that I was below them in terms of financial success. We all paid our own way and had a good time when we went out. Their pretty female friends danced with me. The girls didn't try to hustle me either.
Or the regulars at a bar I used to frequent. None of us were rich, but we'd take turns buying the house a round of drinks. We just wanted to keep the festive atmosphere going.
Anyway...
The broke guy who wanted money for the nightclub brought his cousin, whom I'd never met before, to my house on the way to the club one night. His cousin was saying he'd steal something to get money for the club. I thought he was just talking shit because he was frustrated about not having any money. Soon after they left, I noticed my digital camera had gone missing. It wasn't an outrageously expensive one, but it was pretty nice. Doesn't take a genius to figure out who stole it.
If those are the kind of friends you get when you make a little more money than the average Joe, I can just imagine what kind of friends I'd have if I had a few million bucks.
Oh wait, I wouldn't have that kind of friends because they wouldn't get their foot in the door. I would continue to live a modest but comfortable life. No one would ever know I was rich. I'd just be another middle class guy.
