I guess granny thought Zane was just a piece of garbage and that the police would believe anything she says over him because that's how little she values his life and his role in his childrens' lives.
Hopefully she'll be proven wrong, but I doubt it...
Looks like evil wins in this world more times than not, and that woman is certainly evil.
