Mary was a close platonic companion of Jesus, and his most beloved disciple. She's often called the apostle to the apostles, since she understood the Lord's teachings better than any of the others.
She provided financial support for Jesus' ministry, which leads some to conclude that she was very wealthy. Not necessarily. Jesus led a simple life. It wouldn't have taken much to feed him.
This picture shows Maria Magdalena dressed in expensive clothes and holding a jar of perfumed oil with which she allegedly anointed the feet of Jesus. Again, there is no evidence that she was that anonymous sinful woman. Mary was well known amongst the early Christian community. If the sinful woman had been her, the Gospels would've said so.
