Under the tree probably would've been closer to ideal, but I already had the other setup going on there.
It didn't seem to be thriving due to the clay and poor drainage, so I dug it up and made a mound of 50/50 sand and topsoil over the hole, and replanted it. Maybe it's my imagination, but it looks noticeably healthier a mere 6 or 7 hours later.
The stumps in middle of the crepe myrtle are issuing forth new foliage. It'll have a bushy crown in a few months. I'm gonna round off the top with pruning shears. I'll hold a comb in my mouth like one of them old school barbers whilst I give it a trim, for comic effect.
To untangle the main branches of the rose bushes and make them spread out, I've contrived a network of yarn ties between the branches, a double shepherd's hook, and the front porch, all pulling in different directions. It'll be interesting to see whether they comply or defy.
Also today, I planted a new mailbox to replace the one a friend of ours backed into with his 20-foot trailer.
