So this is a conclusion unrelated to my original post and even my posts from today but...
It is possible that "ghosts" are seen through the peripheral vision...
Cuz go out and look at the starry night sky and out of the corner/edge of your vision you'll see hazy starlike light in areas of the sky that you can't see anymore when you look straight on.
I remember someone saying it's because we are able to see a different spectrum of light out of our peripheral vision.
