Steve wasn't even hitting those high notes on their studio albums by 1986. His voice had become deeper and raspier by then, which is probably what fueled the speculation that he had throat cancer, and that's why he left Journey. Which, as I found out the other day, was totally false. He quit because he was no longer passionate about what he was doing.
