I think you're right. Gab has profound technical issues due to the recent massive increase in traffic that make it unusable for hours at a stretch. Despite the developers working overtime to "scale up" the system, the same issues arise every single day. Gab is frustrating to use on a good day. I've wasted more time than I care to simply trying to post a message or get my notifications to show up.
I understand "growing pains" when a website suddenly grows beyond its original constraints.
I understand the enormous complexity of building a notification system that has to notify everyone who has interest in this or that event in a timely manner, having built that kind of system myself on a smaller scale.
Maybe that's the point. Elaborate systems work up to a point, then get crushed by a heavy user load. The solution is always to throw more resources and complexity at the problem. No one ever considers the possibility that maybe their goals are unrealistic, and maybe they should be content to develop a smaller community or presence.
There are some great posters on Gab nowadays, some on par with the best Twitter had to offer before the censorship ramped up in dead earnest; but most of the content is the same old memes and alternate media news stories regurgitated ad nauseum.
At any rate, I'm not going to let someone else's website drive me up the fucking wall. I deleted my Gab account - again.
