One of the things that's often left out of the alien discussion, is the possibility that they are extinct. Even if there were aliens at one time it's very likely they could have destroyed themselves, or went extinct due to resource depletion or natural causes.

Maybe some are extinct, but most certainly not all... just the same as not all life on this planet is extinct.
