I always assumed it was a kind of roleplaying, like it's fun to consider this alternate reality for those flat-earth guys and see how the physics match up to make it work.
The only way I can relate to it is with the Jones/Hicks thing. I know it's not true (it's too good to be true), but it's mildly fun to think about it and debate it and sift through the "evidence". My favorite argument to shit all over is "Jones is too stupid to be Hicks". I mean, are you fucking kidding me with that sloppy-ass bullshit? Nevermind the fact that Jones isn't even close to "stupid", but how much of a genius would Hicks have to be to fool you so completely that there's no way in a million years you'd believe it? As a Bill Hicks fanatic, of course I would be fucking elated if it was true, because it would take him from the annals of the great comedians to one of the most legendary human beings to have ever walked the earth. Alas... it's most definitely NOT true.
So I've always assumed that flat-earthers recognize internally that the earth is a sphere, but just enjoy arguing their views, and enjoy the way that physics can be tweaked to support their claims, etc. I can't imagine that anyone is losing sleep at night saying "I KNOW it's flat... I will find a way to prove it... I WILL FIND A WAY... (sudden load snoring noises emitted from gaping maw of sleeping wife)".
