In his book Metamagical Themas - an anagram of "Mathematical Games" - AI researcher Douglas Hofstadter describes the behavior of the sphex wasp, which follows a precise sequence of actions when building its nest. If at any point in the process the wasp is interrupted, it starts over from the beginning.
Hofstadter said that a key feature of human intelligence is the ability to recognize when one is stuck in a loop, and jump out of the loop.
