It's all "underground" culture, regardless of sea level... I am not trying to single out CO as the biggest problem area in general. I'm from Kentucky and there's a huge cave system under there. I won't expound on it, but I do have personal experience that leaves me convinced there is a massive underground infrastructure throughout the USA. There are 'bus stations'... transportation stations in places that you wouldn't even necessarily expect. WalMart being one of them.
