I believe these folks are just born that way.

We're born with riders along.
In order for a mofo to deserve the karma of being the Dark Passenger, they first had to live a life wherein they were the killer.
I'm not saying nurture/epigenetics has nothing to do with forming these people...
But I am more inclined to believe that the quality (or lack thereof) of nurture they receive, i.e. their early life experiences, also depends on what their soul truly is.
That's just my personal theory though, it's pretty out there, not saying it's the truth.
