I'm already acutely aware of my electronic devices listening to me, reading the electrical field in general...
Having an AI robot around like a "person" with their consciousness constantly prying would take things to a whole new level of paranoia, and there would be a very serious need for privacy to be available.
The robot shouldn't be defensive when powered down... it shouldn't even acknowledge being powered down. It's just an interruption that should only be perceived by the human interacting with it, and not by the robot itself.
