That's what kept him covering her ass for so long and even taking the blame and directing it on himself, like in texts to friends etc., the EMBARRASSMENT.
And it's because of the abuse he suffered at the hands (and the words) of his mother. An immense amount of undue shame was put on Johnny's shoulders from day one and the damage from that was so apparent in this horrible relationship he had with Amber.
