You can slice it and put it in the fridge for an hour before you eat it, or even flash it in the freezer for a while.
The only time it's acceptable to put the tomatoes in the fridge is if they've been sitting out at room temperature for days and days and it's a last ditch effort to preserve them for longer.
As soon as tomatoes go in the fridge, they basically start turning to mush.
Whereas when left out at room temperature they continue to ripen and the flavor continues to improve.
