Absolutely. The 'smart' phone that the providers offer are complete garbage. Luckily, you don't have to use that one.
The sim can be put into any phone you have. I have one and use it in my iphone.
Another 'freegubmint' thing they have now is free internet based on income or assistance in your state.
I think it's called ACP or something (affordable connection program). https://www.fcc.gov/acp
Went from paying almost 80 a month to zero. Speed is decent (3Mbps/30mbps), streams without buffering, no lag if I decide
to play a game (rarely) and a 2gigabyte (compressed) 1080p movie takes about 20 minutes to download I think, so it's free and
I'm not too proud to beg, ha... The other day I prepared and ate petit filet mignon courtesy of our local food pantry (which also
gave me 2lbs of ground meat).
I bet there's a decent phone that's unlocked for resale you can get the sim, call your provider and switch the sim over
to the phone you get. I'm still using a 4g iphone. I don't use the data that much in public except for using gps to find a
location. In the house it's always connected to wifi. If I run out of minutes, I just use wifi to make a google voice call, or
if I have a contact with an iphone, facetime is the clearest VOIP I've come across.

I don't like apple products but I dislike android operating system even more. Iphone are terrible if you're running a windows pc and want to
transfer pictures/data. That's one thing I liked about androids; easy to transfer any file type to or from the phone.
