I suppose the days of putting moon phases and scrollers and such on the front page are long gone. The "above the fold" space is valuable, and the trend for the last couple of decades has been to reserve it for main site navigation, alerts, and site search. Nobody even spares the space up top for a fancy logo anymore.
These widgets would be useful to spice up a back page app though. Maybe a moon phase on a calendar app, or a scroller on a news page. There are plenty of ways to sneak a little old school chic into a site.
On my site, I'm gonna completely remove the left sidebar with the private messages and alert boxes. These will be displayed in the main chat instead. If the user happens to be AFK or on another page and misses them when they scroll by, some little icons up top will light up, as on any social media site. I may replace the Who's Online box with a chat command to display the user list in the chat window too.
