I guess it's cuz some gifs get pretty big...
There was never any need for them to change any of it.
Pretty sure they're trying to blame it on wanting things to load fast.
But it's really because it just makes it harder for people to save files and if you'll notice, most of these weird extensions don't upload on Imgur (for example) so they make sure you can't share it either.
