The chat will be old school in the sense that a user will only see what's posted while they're online. None of this Discord crap where you can read everything that happened while you were gone for a week. A smooth-running chat on a small site requires the database to be pruned (and possibly archived) every so often anyway. Forums and blogs are for content worth preserving. If someone mentions you in chat while you're online, presumably to get your attention, you'll be notified, but not otherwise.
I'm not keen on archiving entire chats for my own sake. Some of the old school instant messengers allowed users to save their own transcript of the chat. Maybe I'll do that.
