Actually I'm wrong about the alien part, according to the plot on the Wiki page, they were an evolved version of the robots, some shit akin to an alien. I have discussed in depth the reasons why machinery won't survive long-term in the solar system because of EMPs, micronovas, etc. I've also explained that the "aliens" are just biological Earthlings, not of machine based origins.
