It's counter-intuitive, especially when you consider how society views and treats women who are no longer young enough to be a good slave and baby maker. Misery loves company... if you can't be trapped, people are jealous of you and they'd rather not be reminded of your existence. But it's absolutely the best position she could possibly find herself in.
