Dexter: Review & Commentary

So we gotta talk about the books...

I've been listening to them on Audible. I'm up to book 3, Dexter in the Dark. It's my favorite.

I'm looking forward to book 5, Dexter is Delicious. It has an insane plotline that involves cannibalism. But I don't really wanna go out of order, so I gotta listen to book 4, Dexter by Design first.

If it wasn't for MCH's fine ass playing Dexter, I might prefer the books over the show. But of course, being adapted to the screen gives deeper immersion into the Dexterverse that wouldn't exist otherwise. If it wasn't for the TV series, I never would have picked up the books. I doubt I would enjoy it as much if I didn't associate MCH with the character in my mind.

Jeff Lindsay's voice is even kinda similar to Michael C. Hall's voice, which is pretty damn handy and it sweetens the pot for sure if you're listening on Audible. I'm sure you can find free audiobook versions on YT etc. but they won't be voiced by Jeff.

Book version Dexter is fucking awesome. He's basically a total sociopath with no discernible emotion, yet he has a great sense of humor and JUST ENOUGH relatability, which really only comes from his thoughts/inner dialogue.

I like the fact that Dexter has an aversion to sex, he doesn't understand carnal desires and the need to be with other people. He just uses Rita for cover so that he can appear normal. He basically thinks she's a dumbass and he's totally mystified by her, but not in a captivated or romantic kind of way. He just thinks everyone is dumb BECAUSE they're human.

TV show Dexter started out that way, but he ended up "caring" about Rita way more than it looks like Book Dexter is going to. Granted, I am not convinced Show Dexter ever actually gave a shit about Rita, but he was forced to act like he did way more than Book Dexter.

I seriously dislike Deb in the books. She is rarely palatable. Jeff Lindsay does a great job voicing the different characters, and to hear him voice her is exactly the way he must hear her in his own head. Meaning she is a total fucking cunt and wholly unlikable if you ask me. That said, it dawned on me while listening toward the end of book 2 lastnight, she DOES know Dexter's secret. That could be one of the reasons she's such an obnoxious bitch. Regardless, I don't like her. I'm shocked I liked her at all in the TV show, and the fact is... I really don't like anyone in the TV show that much besides Dexter himself.

I don't give a shit about Deb, Rita, Cody or Astor... don't give a shit about Harrison. BTW, in the books, Dexter has a daughter, not a son. I won't give a shit about her either. They're all non-Dexter characters, and they simply don't matter. I feel that way about the books and the show.

I also appreciate the books because Jeff Linsday does a great job explaining what the Dark Passenger REALLY is. It's too bad they didn't lean more into the book's interpretation on the TV show, but whatevs. Like I said... it's dumbed down for TV, wide consumption. It's good enough.

Another thing I like about the books is that Jeff clearly FUCKING HATES pedos, because it seems like Dexter focuses on them a lot. He takes great pleasure in hunting them down and taking them out. In book 2 chapter 27 at the 14:00 mark, Dexter discovers the incriminating evidence he's looking for, and it mentions the predator is associated with N*MBL*. Not even gonna put those letters together on this site. I was shocked to hear the organization called out by name. The Dexter books got some balls, and Jeff has no qualms making it clear exactly whose name is fucking mud.

The TV show didn't really follow along in that same brazen vein. But again, it had to be fit for wide consumption. It's a great show, really can't complain. If I'd seen some shit I hated, I'da called it out.

And I will do so in the future if I see anything that completely repulses me.

For example...

There was no mention of the CV fiasco in New Blood, even though the show took place in 2021. It was a great relief to see the Dexterverse completely disregard the global situation. Shows like Shameless failed in an unforgivably miserable way during that time. Leave that fucking nonsense the fuck out of Dexter, forever. I don't give a fuck if a global nuke war breaks out while they're filming Resurrection during the next few years. Don't address any of that kind of bullshit. We watch to escape. Period.
