So true... shows will start out really good and then just start layering on the propaganda. In most recent years the shows just start out as solid propaganda though.
They use that method on everything in media/entertainment industry. A good example is the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus thing. They got the young girls to 'look up' to Hannah Montana/Miley, framed in a more wholesome way, like a role model. Then later down the road as those girls were going into their late teens/early adulthood, they took Miley Cyrus down a super dark path of ever increasing depravity and perversion. This subconsciously effected all the females who had 'looked up to' the Hannah Montana archetype. A lot of them followed suit with the horrible behavior/bad attitudes/life choices.
I didn't really notice too much terrible propaganda build-up in TV before about the mid 80s. Then they started slowly breaking down the shows/characters that people had gotten to know and love.
One of the shows that was before that mid 80s timeframe that I did notice some 'bad seeds' getting planted around was All In The Family. It still wasn't anywhere near as bad as what we deal with these days though... it all fell off a cliff.
