Ah well, there you have it. He's completely traumatized from a past full of heinous abuse... to the point where he doesn't care about himself or anything at all. All cries for help, the whole nine yards. If he is schizophrenic, it's a known thing that 'the voices' sometimes tell people to harm themselves. Just a point to consider.
