People tend to be more respectful on smaller, well-moderated sites. Large sites are more resistant to rape, pillage, and plunder. For example, the trolls shitting up YouTube comments aren't a threat to YouTube's survival because the quantity and value of the content far outweighs a handful of people's opinions about the content. Unfortunately YouTube has that whole censorship thing working against it.
