Richard Nixon semi quietly did FAR more to disrupt people's lives during the Red Scare of the late 1940's-mid 1950's. He was a big muckity muck in HUAC, and people did go to jail and become blacklisted under his tutelage. Perhaps all that animal magnetism was directed toward getting the commies instead of the babes (for the most part :)). he makes Senator Joseph McCarthy look like a piker by comparison.
