Can we just contemplate how absurd the traditional concept of an 'afterlife' is??

Yes. Jung deemed the light to represent self and the darkness to represent an archetype he called the shadow. The shadow is a projection of the unconscious.

When we become convinced another person or group is evil, we're projecting some unconscious aspect of ourselves that is too uncomfortable for us to acknowledge. It's what happens when we accuse someone else of something we're guilty of ourselves, except we don't see it in ourselves. Everyone around us can see it though, and the hypocrisy is rather obvious to them at that. But since projection is an unconscious activity, we can only recognize we're doing it and break the shadow projection under extraordinary circumstances.

We project other archetypes, most notably anima/animus, as well, but I won't go into all of that right now.

Self and ego are not the same thing. Self is the "other" that gives us a warm, comforting feeling when we sense its presence. Ego is what one perceives as being oneself. It is "me," "myself," and "I." Ouspensky expressed the divided nature of the human psyche by saying a person is not one "I" but many, meaning there is no central coordination among all of the conflicting impulses in one's personality.
