I don't know enough about volcanoes to say either way whether or not 'fissures' used to be a thing.
But the fact that people are coming out of the woodwork claiming to have never heard of this before kind of points to Kilauea as being a 'place marker'.
That's kinda what I meant with this post:

Even when I was doubting the severity of the situation.
Something about that name.
There's something slightly anomalous about the attention being put on Kilauea in conjunction with the familiarity of the name.
