a comet there could do that, but i would imagine the damage done to atlantis would be mitigated by the mountain range sitting between it and north america.
something happend ~12,800 years ago. something BIG. i'm pretty sure it's what got atlantis. i'm not sure if it was a full on earth expansion event or just a re-kachiggering of the wobbly axis. from my research, our solar system had a massive change to it at some point. the sun wasn't our sun, saturn was the pole star. i've not been able to determine if this was the change at 12.8kYa or if it happened much earlier. it's possible that the moon was brought here then and it caused all sorts of chaos on the surface.
