Funny that WaPo and SFGate actually admit that.
For one thing, weaning poor French people off of petroleum isn't going to happen if they can't afford to buy electric vehicles.
For another, the amount of carbon released by French drivers is insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Not to mention, every fucking plant on earth breathes carbon dioxide, so it's not really a pollutant, is it? Saying a carbon tax is the most effective way to reduce carbon emissions is bullshit. Planting a shitload of trees would be far more effective, would improve the quality of life, and wouldn't disrupt the economy.
The carbon tax is only part of the problem in France though. They're fed up with the government micro-managing every aspect of their lives. The yellow vests are symbolic of government overreach. French people are required to keep a yellow vest in their cars in case they break down and have to get out of the car by the roadside. It's rather like Obamacare requiring everyone to either buy health insurance or pay a penalty.
