Countless successful people have lost their shirts and had to start over in a lesser position while they rebuilt their fortunes. It may not be about intelligence. Some people place too much faith in the goodness of their fellow man. Most people have their own best interest at heart, not yours. You can literally count the number of genuinely altruistic people throughout history without taking your socks off.
Does that mean they're evil or malicious? No. Usually they just have their hands full taking care of their own affairs. If it comes down to a choice between your interests and theirs, whose do you think will win out? It's a given that you should always have a Plan B in case someone doesn't come through for you. More so when that person has an established history of being unreliable. Big tech has established that kind of history.
Now, considering that a corporation is only beholden to one group of people - the shareholders - does it even make sense to have faith in them to not throw you under the bus if they see a way to make money by doing so?
