using a nuclear powered laser drilling machine to cut access routes to natural features. they've had these since the 1950s. there's a HUGE network of both natural and artificial tunnels underground that go all over the planet. there are cities and shit down there in caves. the depth is pretty significant. all they gotta do is cover up on the surface and cut from underneath. the lasers vaporize material and make structural walls around it. theoretical access routes from arlington would have been done in the 50s/60s. hardly anyone would have questioned much about work being done there in the 50s/60s/70s.
it's pretty awesome stuff, if only it wasn't being used by such horrible beings.
