The original idea of "cyberspace" implied virtual reality because that was supposed to be the up and coming thing back in those days. The movie Johnny Mnemonic was based on Gibson's novels and better conveys the intended flavor than the WWW does. People had already been using something similar to the Internet for over a decade in the form of dialup BBSes and networks, and I never heard anyone refer to that as cyberspace. The term sort of got co-opted by Internet users after the Web was invented. The Internet used to be pitched to consumers as the "information superhighway."
