AOL started as a Commodore 64 oriented service and grew into the largest ISP of its day. They were completely unprepared for the switch to residential broadband at the turn of the century.
When AOL users discovered they could use a regular browser like Netscape with AOL to surf the Web, a lot of them simply used AOL to get online, then minimized the AOL window and ignored it for the rest of their session.
Then, when cable and DSL become ubiquitous, AOL hoped people would continue to pay $25 a month to use AOL over their $40 a month broadband connection.

Hopefully the next major paradigm shift will catch Goolag, Faecesbook, and Apple off guard. What's a good shitty pet name for Apple?
