I really think that if people want to know what a certain user is up to, they should have to go to their profile and see for themselves. There should be no 'update box' that shows your friends' "status updates". I totally hate that.
And there should be a "Buddy List" kinda system, but I think it should really only show who is online. But you should be able to hide your online status if you want to.
You should be able to add peoples' profiles to your "Favorites" too as a way of keeping track of people even if they don't accept you as a buddy. Favorites can be made private or public.
